History
MedCost, LLC, the largest independent PPO and health management innovator in the Carolinas, is based in Winston-Salem, NC. Founded in 1983, MedCost began by offering health management services only. The young company’s focus was geared toward local employers in the Piedmont Triad. Our PPO services were launched in the late 1980s.

In the 1980s, health care costs were skyrocketing. Health care management companies were responding by imposing restrictions in provider access and choice. MedCost took a different approach, a more grassroots one, based on what people told us they wanted in a health care management company:

• A more patient-centered program
• Freedom to choose their providers, with broad access to providers
• Something less complicated and more flexible

MedCost listened. We responded by offering our customers a different kind of health care management. Today MedCost still places a high value on listening to our customers, and our customers appreciate it. In fact, consistently high customer satisfaction through the years has helped MedCost earn its place as the leading independent health management company.

Today our PPO network encompasses all of North and South Carolina and we have health management customers throughout the nation. The company was purchased in 1996 and under the flagship of our current ownership – Carolinas HealthCare System and North Carolina Baptist Hospitals – MedCost has continued to flourish. Our vision remains constant: to provide the best health care management services at an affordable cost.
